Casa del Sol

The Grupo Voluntario Mexicano Aleman (the Mexican German Volunteer Group) founded the Casa del Sol in 1990 to care for boys and girls, ages 0 to 6, who have been orphaned or have suffered abandonment or abuse. Since it began, more than 900 children have resided at the Casa del Sol, receiving emotional, physical, medical, educational, nutritional, and psychological support. During its first 18 months, the Casa de Sol rented a building with a capacity to house 30 children. In July of 1992, the orphanage opened its own facility and has since provided housing and support services for 80 boys and girls at a time.

In 2005, the Casa del Sol expanded its services significantly by building and opening a Montessori-based school near its orphanage, called the Tonatiuhcali Educational Center. Today, forty of the older Casa del Sol residents and forty children from the neighboring community study together at the Center each school day.

The Cordillera Foundation has supported operating expenses of the Casa del Sol as well as the construction of the Tonatiuhcali Educational Center.
